C. K. Patel, an electrical engineer developed the Carbon Dioxide laser in 1963. The CO2 laser now has more practical applications than any other laser. His invention is now used in laser surgery that we use every day, including the resection of tumours, noninvasive procedures, analysis of chemical composition of the upper atmosphere allowing in weather prediction, detection of pollutants, in communications, in infrared acoustic detection and in the “Star Wars” system, among many others.
